This coming May, I will have been free of Trichotillomania for 16 years without medication, dietary changes, behavior therapy, hypnosis, supplements of any kind, or any outside intervention. After 27 long and painful years, I found the answers within myself. So can you!

Did your hair pulling worsen 2009? Will you allow another year to slip by without finding the answers and relief you deserve? Instead of living with hair pulling, take appropriate action to free yourself now. Your efforts will be rewarded!

Here’s my wish for you for you in 2010…

May you stand proud in the wind and the rain. Regardless of the weather, what others think, or what you think others think about you, stand proud and finally acknowledge the truth of who you are. Acknowledge your gifts, your strengths, your power, your generosity, your sensitive and compassionate heart…and release any lies you’ve told yourself about your lack of worth. It simply is not true.

May you end hair pulling in 2010. May you come to deeply know yourself and own your truth in 2010. May you finally see the Glory that is YOU!

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a new study out about hair pullers who took the amino acid, N-Acetylcysteine.

The Trichotillomania study has received lots of press, but many hair pullers are wondering why. In some participants, high doses of N-Acetylcysteine lowered high-moderate hair pulling to low-moderate hair pulling, but did not stop it, nor did it improve their quality of life.

N-Acetylcysteine is made from chicken feathers, pig bristles and human hair consequently it may have some homeopathic influence but the smell, taste and lingering-effects of this amino acid might cause some hair pullers to resist trying it. N-Acetylcysteine reportedly smells like a combination of garlic and sulfur.

On a more serious note, N-Acetylcysteine comes with a warning bell from the University of Virginia. Taking this amino acid may lead to pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a serious condition producing high blood pressure in arteries leading to the lungs.

Abuse is a very personal experience. Sometimes very sensitive people can experience something as abusive when many others may not consider it so. So keep in mind that we must remain focused on each person’s personal experience and not necessarily the exact truth of a situation.

Here are a few of the characteristics of the compulsive hair pulling child’s perspective on the family:

In childhood, we each felt abandoned and on our own without adequate skills or guidance. We struggled with, now how to thrive, but truly how even to survive. Our families were chaotic and volatile. It was difficult to find any sense of peace. Other family members became angry or upset if we voiced our own needs. We learned to keep them to ourselves if we recognized a need at all. Hair pulling was a way for us to deal with the chronic anxiety that came from shoving ourselves aside in this way.

You’re watching years of bald spots, eyebrows or eyelashes come and go. You’re watching your child struggle and suffer. You’ve been waiting for medical science to come up with a cure for your child for too long now.

Well, right here, right now, before you try anything else,

I am handing you back your power!

The circumstances of your life, your style of relating to others, your parenting style and your relationship with your spouse/partner has likely contributed to your child’s hair pulling problem.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel. If you have contributed to your child’s trichotillomania, there is a greal deal that you can do about it.
